History

The Cherokee Female Seminary, (not to be confused with the first female seminary), serves as the centerpiece of Northeastern State University, located in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. The building was constructed to replace the original Cherokee Female Seminary that burnt to the ground Easter Sunday 1887. The Cherokee Council chose to rebuild the school on a 40-acre site north of Tahlequah. Two years later, on May 7, 1889, the dedication ceremonies were held in honor of the new building. The Female Seminary was owned and operated by the Cherokee Nation until March 6, 1909 when the State Legislature of Oklahoma passed an act providing for the creation and location of Northeastern State Normal School at Tahlequah, Oklahoma, and for the purchase form the Cherokee Tribal Government of the building, land, and equipment of the Cherokee Female Seminary. At the start of the next academic year, on September 14, the first classes were held at the newly created Northeastern State Normal School, now NSU.

Seminary Hall is the oldest building on NSU's campus and in 1994 the building was completely restored. The building now houses classrooms along with academic and faculty offices. It was the first campus classroom building wired for multimedia instruction. At the main entrance of the building is featured three Indian murals painted in the 1930s as a WPA project by Kiowa artists Stephen Mopope, Jack Hokeah and Pawnee artist Albin Jake.

Seminary Hall is considered by many to be haunted, so we asked to be allowed to investigate the claims and our investigation all though our investigation did not gain any real evidence there were considerable personal experiences. The investigation started and we split into two teams, one being an all male team and the other being an all female team. The all male team had nothing to report other than one investigator noticing what seemed to be a shadow following us from a distance on the 3rd floor. The all female team had many unusual moments. While on the 4th floor they had heard someone bang the wall in an unoccupied office, they went inside and found no one there, Tina made every effort to debunk the sound but was unable to come to any conclusion. On the 1st floor while in the "observation" room they noticed shadows under the doorway like someone was pacing in front of the door. When they exited the room there was cleaning supplies in the middle of the floor. No one had seen these items when they entered the room by that same doorway. In another classroom on the 1st floor upon entering the room the lights were on (these lights were motion activated and no one was in the room), they turned off the lights and started their investigation of this room. Anita and one of the clients had seen a few moving shadows but were unable to discern their origin, and had felt that this was a paranormal occurrence. During their investigation the lights would randomly turn themselves on again, after making sure the lights were set to off Tina asked if it was a spirit turning on the lights and if it was could they do it again. At that point the light directly above Tina turned on.

Very beautiful building and campus.

The room with the lights.

The room with the lights that were turning on and off by themselves. At the end of the investigation we tried again but nothing happened
